I am getting conflicting stories - some folks saying annually, some saying 6000 miles, some saying 10,000 miles or more? What is the general consensus that I should follow?

Typically once a year is good enough, however depending on the Terrain you travel and miles you put on that can change

Axle manufacturers are typically saying annually or 6,000 miles. That does seem ludicrous due to the fact that a regular front wheel bearing in a car can go 100,000 miles.
