Experiencing an issue with the trailer brake system. The front axle on my dual axle camper trailer stopped turning while pulling into a campsite, dragging and creating a rut in the grass. Received an error message about servicing the trailer brake system. After stopping, I unplugged the 7-way connector and reinserted it, allowing the trailer to roll again, but the error message remains. I cleaned both the plug and socket with an emery board and CRC contact cleaner. Still receiving the message when plugged in.

A lot of trailer brake issues stem from a bad ground from the trailer.

Check the wiring at the axles for any damage.

Check if the breakaway switch is activated. It's the thin cable next to the safety chains.

One axle being locked while the other is not suggests a wiring issue in the trailer. All four wheels are wired to the same pin on the 7-pin connector. There may be a broken wire between the front and rear axle brakes, affecting either brake voltage or ground. Use a multimeter to check. If the wires are inside the axles, inspect those closely. Many people run new wires inside PVC conduit attached to the axles. The ground issue seems to reside between the two axles, indicating a possible broken wire.

In rare cases, the rear axle of lighter weight trailers may not have brakes, which could explain the situation. If both axles have brakes and the front brakes are locked while the rear work, it suggests damage at the connection point from the 7-pin and where the wires for the two brake lines split off. A bad truck ground would keep the circuit open, preventing the front brakes from locking. Locked brakes occur when they have power or if prior power clamped the magnets down even after power has been removed.
