Troubleshooting Suburban SW6DE Water Heater AC Mode
Virginia Bryant3 months ago96 views
The SW6DE water heater provides electric and propane heating. The propane side works, and the AC side has been tested for a stuck toggle switch, continuity, and resistance with no issues found. The heating element also shows continuity. The AC side does not produce hot water after 2 hours of operation. What steps should be taken next to diagnose the AC heating issue?

With both inside and outside switches in the ON position and the water heater full of room temperature water, check for voltage at the element. One test lead to ground and the other test lead to a screw. Check for voltage on each screw to indicate voltage at the element.

Check the 120v wiring connections. There should be a junction box on the upper right side of the water heater. Ensure the connections are properly made as loose connections can occur during travel.

If the heater works on gas, the T-Stat and Over temp sensor are functional. The electric side includes a remote on/off switch, a relay, and a heating element. A good heating element should be around 9.3 Ohms. Test it with both 120V wires removed and the 120V breaker OFF. Check for a relay on the hot lead going to the heating element.
